Yomu by Xuduan You Studio was designed for friends who live in large cities and continuously moving from apartment to apartment. This design has addressed the needs of these friends—a durable, flat-packable lamp—while combined with sensibilities of traditional Chinese architecture and the materials and textures of the modern city and industrial manufacturing techniques.
Yomu is assembled with six pieces of aluminum sheet, one of which has a preinstalled socket and cord, and three pieces of frosted polycarbonate sheet. These components are recyclable and replaceable if damaged, extending Yomu’s lifetime and eliminating packaging waste on the way.
Yomu was initially designed for a couple friends, all of whom live in large cities such as New York and San Francisco. We were all constantly facing the issue of finding a new apartment and then circumstances would change: rent being raised, a new job opportunity, uncomfortable living situations, the list goes on.
They needed a lamp that was large enough for a side table in their living rooms, one that would create enough ambiance in the evening without being shrouded by the harsh overhead lights. However, they wanted it to be durable and easily packed; glass or paper fixtures need lots of care and bubble wrap when moving, and most plastic lamps look cheap. These necessities are shared among people throughout large cities with small apartments—not only these few friends.
Yomu was developed with these needs in mind, which led to the use of aluminum sheet and frosted polycarbonate sheet that could easily be assembled and disassembled, flat-packed, and moved without the worry of damaging any of the components.
Aluminum frame is completely fastened with mechanical joints—no adhesives, no screws for easy assembly by hand.
Assembly requires no additional tools, no adhesives, no screws. All the joints for the aluminum frame and polycarbonate diffusers are press-fit by hand, creating a lightweight, durable structure.

Polycarbonate diffusers add structural integrity while maintaining an intentional fluid form.
